Headache & Migraine Treatments from a Periodontist? Absolutely.

For years, traditional headache and migraine treatments have involved a wide variety of medications and trigger point management techniques prescribed by doctors and neurologists.  Be that as it may, millions in the U.S. are still suffering chronically from debilitating headache and migraine pain. Traditional methods have not been widely successful, and there has been a clear need for alternative approaches to resolving headache and migraine pain for some time.  It just so happens that the latest breakthroughs in this area of pain management have come in the field of dentistry.

Recent advances in the greater medical community’s understanding of the root causes for headaches and migraines are now changing the methodologies and protocols for both diagnosing and treating such conditions. The newer protocols draw from lessons learned in the areas of sports medicine, dentistry, and physical therapy.  Diagnosis and treatment of chronic headache and migraine pain is now an option from a neuromuscular dentist — not your doctor!

What we now understand about the root causes for headache and migraine pain has led to the formulation of new, non-invasive diagnostic protocols and treatments for headache and migraine pain that can be performed only by skilled neuromuscular dentists such as Dr. McKenzie.

Dr. Gregg W. McKenzie and his staff now offer the latest technologies and treatment protocols for the long-term mitigation of chronic migraine and headache pain — right here in Columbia, SC. Diagnosis and treatment of headache and migraine pain through a neuromuscular dentist is very different than you may be used to with traditional providers. No drugs, needles, or surgical procedures are necessary.

Today we know that neuromuscular force imbalances in the Stomatognathic System (all hard and soft tissues directly involved with the jaw and face) are involved in the the vast majority headache and migraine pain conditions.  For millions of people, and possibly you too if you suffer chronically, these neuromuscular force imbalances of the Stomatognathic System may be at the heart of your pain. If that is so, we can tell you through comprehensive diagnosis AND we can help you with modern neuromuscular rehabilitation techniques.

What kind of headaches and migraines can we treat?

Neuromuscular force problems are usually at the heart of persistent headache and migraine pain conditions. Our diagnostic technologies and pioneering headache and migraine treatments are applicable to many different variations of headaches and migraines, as well as some other chronic pain conditions:

  • Persistent Daily Headaches
  • Chronic Tension-type Headaches
  • Cluster Headache Syndromes
  • Migraines with & without Aura
  • Unexplained Orofacial Pain
  • Patients with conditions such as TMJ / TMD, Chronic Muscle Tension of the Head and Neck, and Neuralgias could also benefit significantly from neuromuscular rehabilitation and bite-force equilibration.

About Headache & Migraine Diagnosis

Headache and migraine diagnosis at McKenzie Periodontics is easy and painless for the patient. Getting a diagnosis from Dr. McKenzie has the potential to shed new light on your condition. For the first time ever, you may end up finding out WHY you suffer chronically with headaches and migraines.

Diagnosis involves an in-office exam at Dr. McKenzie’s Columbia, SC periodontics practice. This exam usually takes around 90 minutes to complete. During the exam, we will thoroughly explore your medical history as well as your history with headaches, migraines, and other pain conditions. Several cutting-edge technologies will be used during the diagnosis, including Bite Force Analysis (TScan) and Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) to pinpoint neuromuscular force problems and any issues that may exist in the TMJ joints.  3D models of the bite force distributions of your teeth, face, jaw, etc. will be rendered for the doctor’s review and the results will be interpreted and shared right away.

Additionally, your range of motion impairment will be measured carefully with ROM testing, and the muscles of your head, neck and face will be palpated to locate trigger points (locations of pain, soreness, and subdermal tension that contribute to headache and migraine pain). All of this diagnostic testing has the ability to expose the root causes for many headache and migraine pain conditions. Knowing the real root causes for pain is the first step in achieving lasting headache and migraine pain relief.

Non-invasive Headache & Migraine Treatments — NO Drugs or Surgery

Dr. McKenzie creates customized treatment plans for all headache and migraine patients. Each patient is unique and therefore treated uniquely. The types of headache and migraine treatments we frequently employ include low-level application of Cold Laser, manual manipulation/massage techniques, ultrasound of the affected muscles, and cranial electrical stimulation (CES).

If there are neuromuscular force problems at the heart of your pain — which is true for so many headache and migraine patients — a proper diagnosis by Dr. McKenzie can expose them. Knowing precisely where and how to target the treatment protocols allows us to rehabilitate neuromuscular force problems and equilibrate an uneven bite.  The correction of bite force distribution problems helps to ensure proper muscle function throughout the entire Stomatognathic System. In fact, neuromuscular rehabilitation may not only restore full function to areas of dysfunction, stress, and pain — it could also provide lasting relief for your persistent headache or migraine pain condition.  Treating the root causes for headache and migraine pain instead of the symptoms could produce life-changing results.

We have the technology, we have the know-how, and we’re ready to help you end the pain. If you suffer with chronic headaches or migraines, perhaps it’s time to explore Dr. McKenzie’s non-invasive, drug-free headache and migraine treatments to see if we can help you finally break free from the pain — for the long-term!
